Is that Cabbage for Real?

Contact: Chris Conant, More Cabbage 817 453-2350

In a word, yes—the image on the home page is for real. This breed of cabbage is appropriately named “giant cabbage.” You can purchase the seeds on-line, specifically on ebay, where we last saw them. Other photographs of giant cabbage can be found in our history and our awards sections.

Other areas of the site contain old photos of monstrous human-sized cabbage, such as the one to your left. These are not real, but were produced as a symbol of American pride well before photoshop was invented. These images are part of our collection of “exageratted postcards” issued between 1906-1916. The postcard images commonly shared a boastful reference to a state or county such as “This is how things get done in Ohio”. The postcards were photographed by photographer and artist, W.H. Martin. Martin used two separate images and composed them in the darkroom using his own masking technique.

Martin produced other exaggerated postcards of cabbage that can be viewed in these sections: More More Cabbage, What Makes Us a Good Choice?, and Charity and Giving
